All memberships at the level of $175 and up include free access to equipment and resources for non-commercial public access productions only. In basic terms, this means that no one can be compensated for use of equipment provided through their membership and that the content produced must not have commercial messages of any kind. Content produced using DOM's equipment must also be released under a creative commons license, which allows our non-commercial partners to also air your work. Complete guidelines are posted in the membership agreement and content ingest agreement. Furthermore, all sponsorship or underwriting must be managed by Deproduction/Denver Open Media in accordance with our underwriting guidelines.
Feel free to ask us if you think your project might not fit within these guidelines. Equipment access for paid, commercial, or other use not permitted in the membership agreement can be accommodated through discounted equipment rental from Deproduction.
In order to enroll in any of our membership programs, you or your organization must first have an account on our website. If you do not already have an account, registering is a quick process (less than a minute) and can be done by going to www.denveropenmedia.org and clicking on "Register Here" just below the header on the right.
There are two different methods of registering into any given membership program. The easiest method is automatic registration, which requires you to pay with a credit/debit card or Paypal. The second method, manual registration, is more time consuming for staff but the only currently available option if you wish to pay by check, cash, or money order.
This option is very easy. Click here to go to the registration page. You can also get to the registration page from www.denveropenmedia.org: just click the "Join DOM" tab, then "Membership," and then "Individual Registration." You will be presented with the membership signup page, which includes information about credit card processing. DOM does not yet have an official SSL certificate, so you will be confronted by a certificate browser warning. Please ignore this warning; your credit card information is safe and encrypted.
- Go to CiviCRM (accessible via the text menu at the top left of the website, if CiviCRM is not listed as an option you need to be given the fundraiser permission. Contact Laura if you do not have this permission but feel that you need it.)
- The staff member should ask the registree for the email address he or she used to register and type it into "Quick Search" on left of the page. The search should return the user's contact entry at the bottom. If it doesn't work, try placing % signs before and after the name before clicking "search." Click on their contact entry.
- The staff member will now be looking at the registree's profile, including his or her contact summary. Clicking "edit" will take the user to a form where either the staff member or the registree can enter general information. The more information the better, but for a list of required fields please see this page.
- Next, if the registree is paying for a membership, the staff member needs to click on the "Contributions" tab. Otherwise, skip down to "Next, go to the Memberships tab."
- On this page the staff member should click on "New Contribution" or "Enter One Now" and fill out the form. For now the staff member should ignore all of the fields below "Total Amount." When the staff member is done filling the form, click "Save" at the bottom of the page and register your payment.
- Next, the staff member needs to go to the "Memberships" tab. He or she can click on either "New Membership" or "Enter One Now." Fill out the following fields in this form: Membership Type and Join Date. Ignore the rest of the fields and click on Save at the bottom.
- Congratulations, you've just registered as a member!
The process for registering an organization is very similar to the process of manually registering an individual.
- One of the organization's members must first create an account on the website as described above under "Prerequisites for Member Registration." The individual should register themselves, not the organization. For example, my name is Brian and I work for Denver Open Media. If I am purchasing an organizational membership, I create a login and password for myself (Brian) not for the organization. The individual account will be related to the organization later.
- The individual registering the organization should then sit down with a DOM staff member, who will guide him or her through the creation of the organization's entry in CiviCRM. This process is identical to the manual membership registration process above except the staff member will not search for the individual's login or username. Instead they will go to the CiviCRM homepage, scroll to the bottom and click on "Add New Organization" on the right.
- In CiviCRM, the staff member will fill out the summary page, and then make the appropriate contribution through the "Contributions" tab, and finally add the membership through the memberships tab. Refer to the above section on manual registration if necessary.
- If the organization would like to pay by credit card or Paypal, have them login under their own account and go to the "Organization Payment" page (here). A link to this page can be found under the "Membership" section of the "Join DOM" tab.
- The final step to an organizational membership is associating the individual who registered the organization with the organization in CiviCRM. To do this, search for the individual's name in the "Find Contact" area of CiviCrm. Click "View" on their profile, and then click on the relationships tab.
- Click on "Add Relationship", select "Employee Of" from the first drop-down box. In the search box, type the employee's organization name and click search. Select the check-box that should show up next to the organization's name, ignore the rest of the information, and click "Save Relationship" at the bottom.
- Finally, if the individual registering the organization is going to be one of the 4 individuals granted unlimited access to our services, make sure to go to the membership tab and add the membership to their account. Since each organizational membership includes 4 unlimited individual memberships, each individual (except perhaps the one you just signed up while doing the organizational membership) will need to be taken through the manual individual registration process above (you will not enter a contribution for them however, as the organization already paid.)
- Interns who complete a full 200-hour internship will receive a free, one-year Programming Membership. Any upgrades to other memberships will have to be done following the volunteer debt already outlined on the website. While active, interns are considered to have an unlimited membership, though use of field equipment outside of DOM is contingent upon certification from the station, education or executive director.
- People who are what DOM terms "non-consistent contractors"—ie, are hired on a contract job basis to work less than 20 hours per week for less than 3 months—have the option to be paid at regular hourly rates, or have their hourly rates held or garnished until 75 percent of the cost of a one-year membership cost (any level) is reached.
- People who are what we call "regular contractors or consistent contractors"—ie, people hired for a contract position at DOM for 20 hours per week or more for a full 3-month period or more—they have the privilege to use our equipment for free during the time of their contract, as long as the equipment is available to use and as long as the contractor has been certified by the station, education or executive director. Contractors have the option to specify (in their contract) that their wages be held or garnished until 50 percent of the cost of a one-year membership cost (any level) is reached.
- Any other special arrangement, such as "lifetime or honorary" memberships, will be given out rarely, will only be Programming Memberships, and all have to approved by the executive director.
Any DOM member or non-member can earn free membership at DOM by helping to promote DOM in the community, through registering block underwriters, or by selling Individual or Organizational Memberships.
